The students in a Journalism I class at Hazelwood East, started a digital newspaper. Two weeks ago, the students divided themselves into five equal groups, and began writing, editing and publishing articles for the paper. The idea for the blog came from Ms. Goff, a new English teacher at East.
Throughout the school’s existence, Hazelwood East published a newspaper called “The Spartan Spectrum”, it was written and edited by a Journalism II class. Today’s students never knew about the paper. When Ms. Goff introduced the idea for the blog, she asked the student journalists to come up with a name. The students agreed that the name should stay“The Spartan Spectrum”.
Asia Vaughn, a senior at East, said, “A blog seems interesting, I would probably read it.”
Two other anonymous upperclassmen were interviewed and gave the impression that they didn’t think the spectrum would have a huge impact towards the school, with nonchalant answers. Comments such as, “People in the school wouldn’t too much care that it is here and wouldn’t want to read it.” The other simply came out and said, “This newspaper would not impact anything.” Tese student quotes lead me to believe we aren’t going to get too far with the new, improved Spartan Spectrum.

The impact will be what you make of it. There have always been and always will be interesting stories here. It is good to see a tradition make its way back. Your effort, dedication, and passion will be what can bring about the impact!

I too am happy to see the Spectrum back at Hazelwood East. While it may. It have the impact on the school that a school paper once had it will serve as a valuable learning tool for those students that create it. Students can learn about journalism and reporting but the purpose driven act of doing the work will have a lasting impact.

I for one am happy to see The Spectrum back. Some students may not be interested, however, there are plenty of others that like be informed and involved with what is going on at school. I have enjoyed reading so far!
