Hazelwood East football team has a record of 1 to 2 as of September 18, 2019. The first game they lost was against Lafayette High School with a score of 22 to 33. The game took place at Hazelwood East High school and there were said to be at least 2 injuries and one of those injuries lead to a player being out for the season.
In the previous year, this was not the case. Hazelwood East beat Lafayette and a lot of people were hoping that they would win again but that didn’t happen. East took a loss and that resulted in multiple players being hurt.
When asked, “why do you think the game wasn’t successful for Hazelwood East”? one of the players who was injured named Nick Shaw replied, “The players were bigger and faster, it prevented us from playing to the best of our abilities.¨
Shaw has swelling in the inside of his leg as well as the outside. Unfortunately, Shaw is a senior which means this will be his last time playing football in high school with the peers he grew up with. Although he is injured he plans on coming to support his team at each game that follows. This is similar to another player who was injured during the game.
Javan McClendon is a sophomore at Hazelwood East High School who has been diagnosed with a mild concussion. McClendon was injured due to being hit in his blind spot by a Lafayette player while trying to tackle one of their players who had the ball. He says it wasn’t until after the game that he started having symptoms such as headaches and irritation of eyes from bright lights. He is now waiting to be cleared so he can play again but in the meantime, he keeps up with the exercise so he can be prepared.
Despite some of the players getting hurt or injured, the Hazelwood East football team continues to work very hard to earn more victories, while still supporting each other from the sidelines.
