The Hazelwood School District Board voted on a decision to move East Middle School to a part of East high school to save money at its Feb. 7, 2017, meeting. With no say, many reactions erupted from the community of East High attendees. After questioning the seniors (who were most affected by the decision) about how they felt about the eighth graders being transitioned to East high, all of the responses were similar. One senior said “leave, it sucks” and another said, “I don’t like”. Seniors are very upset that their privileges have been stripped from them and the class of 2018 will be the only class who has. To gain another perspective on the situation we also interviewed teachers who have been working at East for a substantial amount of time. The teachers’ responses varied. One teacher said, “it doesn’t bother me”. The teacher explained the how the eighth grader’s transition was irrelevant to their position in the school. Another teacher said, “I feel bad for the seniors”. This teacher explained how seniors were upset that this transition was forced upon seniors and felt bad for them. Opinions still collide about the eighth graders in the halls of East High.
