In recent months at Hazelwood East High School, things have been less than desirable for a healthy learning environment. One issue that plagues the hallways of Hazelwood East is the constant fights and multiple acts of violence. Physical altercations stopped the process of learning and caused disruptions, but multiple rules are being implemented in an attempt to prevent the various reports of violence. Constant hall sweeps, principal dismissing, caution of hall passes, but the fights continue to rage on
“Pent-up up aggression between the students in the school are the main cause for the fights”, says Ronald Brown, a senior from Hazelwood East High School. This specific quote shows that other students around the school, not just the ones involved in the altercations, notice the built up hostility around the school.
“If they want to fight lock ‘em, send ‘em to jail and charge them with assault” said Lawndale Thomas, counselor at East High School regarding what should happen to the students that fight. He believes that students have been warned too many times and action needs to be taken not just verbal consequences.
